Takashinga Thrash Jersey By 5 Wickets

TAKASHINGA dismissed visiting Jersey by five-wickets in a 50-over match played at Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfield, Harare on Thursday.

Opener Tinashe Kamunhukamwe top-scored with 77 runs from 75 balls while Rodney Mupfudza weighed in with 55 off 63 deliveries the two starring in an 89-run partnership for the second wicket as Takashinga chased down Jersey’s 180 all out in 44 overs inside 33.2 overs.

Jersey skipper Stainley Norman opted to bat after winning the toss. He was however, the first one to depart for 13 runs in the 11th over, caught and bowled by Ryan Simbi with the Jersey on 48/1 after 10.2 overs.

Spinner Tapiwa Mufudza removed Harrison Carlton with a defiant 47 off 53 balls when he had him caught by his captain Roy Kaia. Jersey were on 79/2 after 17.5 overs. However, Carlton’s departure opened further inroads for Takashinga as Zak Tribe fell for duck trapped plum by Kaia to leave the scoreboard reading 80/3 after 19 overs.

Kaia was back again with a wicket off the last ball of his next over, Jonty Jenner falling in similar fashion as Tribe; duck and LBW. After 20 overs Jersey were reeling on 88/4 and it became increasingly difficult for the visitors as they lost their sixth wicket, Josh Lawrenson run out by Mupfudza and wicketkeeoer Cunningham Ncube to leave Jersey on 89/5 after 21.4 overs.

A 59-run sixth wicket partnership between Charlie Brennan and Patrice Gouge brought temporary releave to Jersey before Simbi broke the partnership when he had the former caught by substitute fielder Wallace Mubaiwa for 34 runs to leave Jersey on 148/7 after 36.4. It was however only a matter of when they would submit to the hosts as Takashinga cleaned Jersey tail for 32 runs at the expense of the remaining four wickets.

Takashinga started off the chase in earnest with before opener Tanunurwa Makoni, 22 off 28 balls was caught by Daniel Birrell off Julius Sumeruer’s bowling after 8.5 overs. The hosts had raced to 48 runs while Kamunhukamwe was stumped by Birrell off Tribe’s bowling.

Jersey are in Zimbabwe to fine-tune their ICC Men’s 2027 World Cup Qualifiers preparations scheduled for Nairobi, Kenya from September 25 to October 5. The Qualifiers will feature Denmark, Kuwait, PNG, Jersey, Qatar and hosts Kenta.

Jersey will train at the Takashinga facility on Friday before playing against SOGO Rangers in their last 50-over match at Takashinga Cricket Club on Saturday.

Fresh off winning the National Premier League (NPL), the Patriots carried their momentum into this clash.

Led by a strong all-round bowling performance, the home team successfully chased a modest total posted by Jersey.

Opting to bat first, the Jersey batsmen struggled to find a rhythm against the disciplined Takashinga attack.

Patriots’ bowling attack, led by the ever-reliable Roy Kaia, stifled Jersey’s batting line-up. Kaia, with his three-wicket haul, was the architect of Jersey’s downfall.

Opener Stainely Norman fell early to young spinner Ryan Simbi, setting the tone for a challenging day at the crease. Harrison Carlton top-scored with 47 before he was dismissed by Tapiwa Mufudza.

Kaia was the pick of the Takashinga bowlers, claiming 3 crucial wickets, including the scalps of Zake Tribe and Jonty Jenner.

Simbi also chipped in with 2 wickets, while Tafadzwa Tsiga and Munashe Chipara provided able support.

Jersey were eventually bowled out for 180 in 44 overs.

In the run chase, Takashinga lost opener Tanunurwa Makoni early, but a 55-run second-wicket stand between Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Rodney Mupfudza stabilised the innings.

Kamunhukamwe then took charge, striking a blistering 77 off 75 studded with eight boundaries and three maximums to effectively seal the victory for the hosts. were a treat to watch. Mupfudza’s contribution of 55 runs further solidified the Patriots’ dominance.

With the target in sight, the Patriots cruised to victory, reaching 182/5 in 33.2 overs.
