AS the Zimbabwe national cricket team prepares for the decisive second Test match against Bangladesh beginning tomorrow in Chattogram, all eyes are on towering Takashinga Cricket Club seamer Blessing Muzarabani, whose heroics in Sylhet have thrust the Chevrons to the brink of a historic series victory.
Zimbabwe are now just one win away from achieving a rare and memorable series win in the longest format of the game, a feat that is not often associated with the underdog Chevrons.
The victory was spearheaded by Muzarabani, who delivered a performance for the ages.
The six-foot-eight quick ripped through Bangladesh’s batting lineup taking nine wickets for 122 runs, including a destructive six for 72 in the second innings.
This was Muzarabani’s third consecutive five-wicket haul in Test cricket, a feat that turned the match on its head.
He has now equalled former captain Heath Streak’s record as the fastest Zimbabwean to reach 50 Test wickets.
Zimbabwe head coach Justin Sammons, who has boldly declared the team’s aim to win the series despite the odds, had placed his faith in his seamers, and Muzarabani delivered a brilliant performance.
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine, equally buoyed by the win, was full of praise for Muzarabani’s growing influence.
“I think he’d be up there. He has the experience through the red ball and playing various leagues,” Ervine said.
“He has shown his ability. I am excited to see where he goes in his career in all formats.”
Ervine also emphasised Muzarabani’s leadership with the ball and his composure under pressure.
With momentum on their side and Muzarabani in red-hot form, Zimbabwe’s dream of taming the Tigers and clinching a landmark series win is within reach.
